What to expect with the 2017 tax season

We want to begin our first post of 2017 by wishing our readers a Happy New Year. With the new year comes new beginnings, and undoubtedly resolutions. One of the most popular is a promise not to procrastinate. While some may abide by this and get more things done, the federal government is not one to keep people waiting when it comes to tax filing season.

According to a recent journalofaccountancy.com article, the IRS reports that there will be no delays in accepting income tax returns as tax filing season begins. Unlike previous years, the run-up to tax season was not hampered by the uncertainty of extending expiring tax provisions. Essentially, two important pieces of legislation were passed, the Protecting Americans From Tax Hikes (PATH) Act of 2015 and the Consolidated Appropriations Act helped to ensure that the IRS will be ready for tax filing as expected in 2017.

After years of budget cuts, last year’s tax season saw increased levels of service between the IRS and taxpayers to help answer questions and avoid identity theft. It is expected that this level of service will continue this year. Also, returns that include claims for the earned income tax credit (or an additional child tax credit) may not see a refund until February 15.

Nevertheless, the common issues that arise during tax season can generally be resolved through a conversation with an experienced tax law attorney. If you have questions about refunds that are being withheld because of back taxes owed, levies or fines, or offers in compromise, we invite you to contact us
